A few tips for ending you ice fishing season...
I remove all line from my reels at the end of the season and leave them unspooled until next fall. When that time rolls around I will rethink what line I want to respool on each particular rod & reel with in regard to performance, but most importantly it assures me of having fresh line on each reel to start the hard water season. It eliminates guessing from season to season which reel does/does not have fresh line to fish with.
The reels that I use braided line on, I usually unravel onto the floor in a neat, circular pile, retie the used end back on to the reel and carefully rewind back into place. Those unused yards of braid will usually last another full season.
Consider cleaning & oiling (light oil) all reels that you think are in need of cleaning. Not every ice fishing reel needs seasonally cleaning as they typically don’t get the rigorous use our open water reels receive. You be the judge.
I also like to go thru my hooks, jigs, lures and remove all knots that remain on hook eyes. It makes that first trip back on the ice go much smoother. That includes all remnant baits and plastics that no longer look like they’re supposed to. Small hooks and jigs that are badly bent out of shape will usually get tossed also.
My portable is stored collapsed, out back in a wood shed. In order to prevent mice from visiting and chewing up the canvas and pooping all over I scrub the tub w/ hot soapy water, removing all the crushed/stuck on minnow, larvae, etc., from the floor, seats and canvas. I then place some rodent deterrent (2-3 pieces) in the tub. This seems to work very well at keeping those critters away in the off season.
